Grandma Cassell
Passes Away
A remarkable pioneer woman goes to her last rest – funeral held Tuesday.
In the death of
“Grandma” Cassell in Hudson last Saturday evening Douglas county loses one of
its most remarkable pioneer women.
Mrs. Janette Cassell, whose maiden name was Pennie, was born in
Fifeshire, Scotland, on December 9, 1833.
She came to America in 1852 and was married to George Cassell in
Whiteside county, Illinois, in 1857.
Mr. And Mrs. Cassell resided in Illinois and Wisconsin for eight years,
coming to Douglas county in 1865, settling in section 36, Hudson township. Mrs. Cassell has lived in this vicinity
ever since. Mr. Cassell died ten
years ago. Ever a home woman, her
horizon was bounded by the circle of her family and friends. Ten children were born to Mrs. Cassell,
eight sons and two daughters, all of whom were present at the funeral. Mrs. Cassell was remarkable for the
fact that she brought up her ten children without at any time calling a doctor
for them or herself, until her last illness. The last years of her life she spent at the home of her son,
James, where she passed peacefully away at the age of eighty years and five
months. The best that may be said
of any woman may be said of Mrs. Cassell – she died beloved of her family and
friends.
With the exception
of Daniel, who resides in Stillwater, Mrs. Cassell’s sons all live in the
vicinity of the old home. The
daughters are Mrs. Rudolph Moede of Fort Benton, Montana and Mrs. A. Wamsley of
Mageson, Montana. Three brothers
and one sister also survive Mrs. Cassell.
The brothers are Peter and Daniel Pennie, living in Pope County, and
John Pennie, of Roseburg, Oregon.
The sister is Mrs. M. L. Webb also of Roseburg, Oregon.
The funeral was
held from the home of James Cassell on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Parish, of
Villard, officiating. The services
were largely attended, many taking the opportunity to pay their last respects
to a longtime neighbor and friend.
The remains were laid to rest beside those of Mr. Cassell in lake Leven
cemetery. The pall bearers were
Lester Pennie, William Pennie, Thomas Pennie, Thos. H. Pennie, Duncan Pennie,
and James Townsend, all nephews of the deceased.
“Farewell mother
your work is done,
You’ve served you time like the setting sun.
Like the rising sun with its radiant glare,
You will rise on that morning bright and fair.
You will rise to join the angel band,
And take a seat at his right hand.”
The family wish to
extend their thanks to friends for the many beautiful floral tributes in memory
of their mother.
Emigration : Janette immigrated
with her family to the Untied States in 1853, sailing aboard the ship Statira Morse. It sailed out of Glasgow and
disembarked at the Port of New York. She and the family proceeded onward on
other vessels across the Great Lakes to Illinois.
