Written by Auntie Bell[xvii]

This should be considered not only an important document recording significant events in the Webb / Herrick Families of Huron County, Ohio in the era prior to 1850, but an important document for women’s history studies because it is an example of an early record that is inherently oriented towards the documentation of woman as the primary subject. It is especially valuable because the Federal Census, prior to 1850, recorded only the head-of-household (which could include widows) but omitted wives, sons, daughters, or any other free or enslaved inhabitants; their existance only eluded to by enumeration..

Transcription by Jonathan Webb Deiss; document courtesy of Vinton and Elizabeth Philips of Huron County, Ohio.

[i]   Levi Wilson and Lucy Kellogg married 8 June 1832

[ii]   Daniel M. Gauff and Rebecca W. Kellogg married 23 May 1833

[iii] In the original document the word Township was written and the crossed out. The author followed the correction with a word, of which only the first several letters can be read clearly.

[iv] Syrus H. Starr and Polly F. Kellogg married 3 November 1834.

[v] The author’s cursive script slants too far to the right for the transcriptionist to discern ‘n’ from ‘m’.

[vi] Charles Gardener married Lucy Amerman 10 April 1823.

[vii] John Hagaman married Tina Amerman 13 October 1825.

[viii] John B. Cook married Eleanor Amerman 18 February 1834.

[ix] Horace Perry married Sarah Amerman 25v November 1834.

[x] William W. Beckwith married Anna Herrick 20 October 1819.

[xi] The author crossed out an ‘I’ then rewrote Iowa.

[xii] Ephrahim W. Herrick married Electa Webb 30 March 1825. They had a son Charles Herrick

[xiii] Electa Webb was born 23 October 1800 in Rome, Oneida County, New York and moved to Ridgefield, Huron Couny in 1822 with her father and mother, David and Lydia Webb and her siblings.

[xiv] This is almost illegible, the author’s handwriting is unclear.

[xv] William N. Mitchell married Clarissa Beach 18 October 1832.

[xvi] Stephen Barker married Jane Beach 19 October 1834.

[xvii] This was written on the obverse of the document by someone other than the author.
