A search at the Scots Origins site (extracts and indexes of Old Parish
Records, etc) reveals that she is indeed older than the family-tradition
states, as a record of her
christening exists for 29 January 1843. 
Her baptismal certificate states, “Penny –
Isabella Scott, Daughter of Thomas Penny, Labr. Whinfield, by Mary Drummond his
wife, was born on the 13th & baptized on Sabbath the 29th of January 1843
by W. Tannoch.”

the Untied States in 1853, sailing aboard the ship Statira Morse. It
sailed out of Glasgow and disembarked at the Port of New York. She and the
family proceeded onward on other vessels across the Great Lakes to Illinois,
Wisconsin and eventually Minnesota.
