Medical : Sam suffered a terrible prostrating sunstroke on or about 15 July 1862, on the march to Battle Creek, Tennessee, for which he was discharged from the service.  Complained of being weak, unsteady and generally nervous ever since.  By 1891 he suffered from heart disease and a ruptured hernia.

Military Service : Samuel Geller is listed as a Private on a Roll of Independents, Jackson Rifle Company of Captain Josiah Miller dated 17 April 1830.  The purpose for and under what authority the company served is not known, perhaps they were militia.  He was in Union service in the Civil War in Company K, 15th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  He was enlisted by O. S. Holloway at Flushing, Ohio on 1 November 1861 for a term of three years.  He gave his age as 44 years and his occupation as Musician.  He was mustered in, on or about, 17 November 1861 to Company K, 15th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a Private.  He was marked as Present during the time his company was known to have been at Shiloh, 6-7 April 1862.  He received a prostrating sunstroke on or about 17 July 1862 while marching with his company from Corinth, Mississippi to Battle Creek, Alabama and he was carried to an ambulance by Private Benjamin R. Buffington, the son of his neighbor at home.  The sunstroke left him permanently disabled and he was discharged 5 August 1862 by reason of disability.  He applied for a pension 22 April 1863.

Notes : He served with some distinction in the Civil War (in the same unit as his father), as Musician for Company K, 17th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the 90 day service and on 10 October 1861 was mustered in to the Field and Staff of the 15th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry as Principal Musician - he gave his age as 18 and then as 19 years old, but he was only 16½ years old in 1861.  He was mustered out in January 1862.   He was, by occupation, a harness and saddle maker.  In 1870 he was living in his father’s home and was a Junior Saddler, and from at least 1880 until the mid 1890’s lived in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia employed in the trade.
