Full name : Samuel M. Hilterbrand
Alternate spellings, aliases : Samuel H.; Samuel M. Helterbrand; at some point
it appears that Sam deliberately changed the spelling of his surname from Helterbrand,
to Helterbran, then to Hilterbrand. All early works record him as
Helterbrand, including his federal Service Record and Missouri state muster
card, but by 1880 was using Hilterbrand. When he signed his signature in
1878, 1880 and 1908, it was as Hilterbrand. This was supposedly due to a
‘mix-up’ with the Military records, but he may have also tried to leave his
Confederate service behind, as he was enrolled as Helterbrand.

Unit3 : Company K, 16th Regiment Missouri Cavalry Volunteers (USA)
Rank : Private
Term of Service : 1 November 1863 - 11 July 1865
Notes : Sam joined the 12th Reg’t Missouri Volunteers CSA on 15 August 1862
from Oregon County, Missouri to T. H. Turner for 3 years or the duration of the
war. He promptly deserted 31
August 1862 at Randolph County, Arkansas. At some point he was in the 6th
Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia prior to being in the 16th Cavalry.
His service record indicates that he was on detached service in March and April
of 1865. Otherwise his service record reveals very little about his
service. According to Sam's own affidavit, he served for 3 years and 7 months
aggregated service in two organizations, Company K, or L, 6th Provisional
Enrolled Missouri Militia and Company K, 16th Regiment Missouri Cavalry
Volunteers. Considering that he was born 2 June 1846 and was discharged in the
summer of 1865, it appears that he was only about 15 and a half years old when
he joined the Confederate service. He was wounded in October 1864 while
chasing a horse, apparently he ran against a clothes-line and was flung to the
ground breaking his right shoulder and his right collar bone.

Notes : June Elizabeth is listed as Lizzie in her father's pension
affidavit and as Liley Helderbrand on Vivian's birth certificate, but
what also should be noted about that document is the many misspellings that
appear in it. For instance, Vivian's father William, is listed as being born in
Kantuckey. W. H. Dabney, known as Henry, had a brother named Willard,
who owned a farm near Salem, Missouri; had daughters Ruth and Alpha.
Violet Dabney married Walter Koehr (12 October 1905 - 24 September 1988), but
may have later divorced.
