Lydia Parmelee Webb

Full name : Lydia Parmelee
Alternate spellings, aliases : Parmele, Parmale, Parmely

Putative Parents1 :
Father : Ozias Parmelee
Mother : Lydia Pierson
Notes : From Killingworth Town Record, “Lydia, m Ozias PARMELEE, Dec 24, 1767”

Putative Parents2
:
Father : Amos Parmely
Mother : Lucia, nee : ?
Notes : Very little is known about this family; originally I suspected she was the daughter of Ozias Parmele and Lydia Pierson of Killingsworth.  Now, after a careful examination of the Records of the First Congregational Church of Westmoreland, Oneida County, New York, I am working on the theory that she is possibly a child of Ozias Parmele & Lydia Pierson or of Amos & Lucia Parmely (also spelled Parmelee).

Vital stats :
Date of Birth : 24 October 1776

Place of Birth : Killingworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA
Note : The 1776 date is an unverified date from the notes of Webb Hester; …from Killingworth town records, as abstracted by Barbour lists, “Lydia, dau Ozias & Lydia, b Jan 13, 1772”
Date of Death : 1 or 2 March 1845

Place of Death, and or Burial : Ridgefield Township, Huron County, Ohio
Notes : She is probably not buried in Webb Cemetery (Lot 7, Section 2, Ridgefield), but that is unclear.  Her broken gravestone was found in a roadside ditch by 4-H volunteers in Huron County, Ohio and given to David Hester, her great-great grandson.

Spouse
Name : David Webb
Date of Marriage : 3 January 1798
Place of Marriage : First Congregational Church, Westmoreland, Oneida County, New York
Died : November 1865
Notes : At this early date (1790’s), Westmoreland and Whitestown were names both used for the same general locale in Oneida County, one being the township the other the town proper, then later the township name also was used for a town.  Both names were mutually used during the early history of Oneida County.

Occupation(s) : wife, mother, keeping house

Religion : She was married under the auspices of the First Congregational Church (Westmoreland, Oneida County, NY), but does not appear to have joined that particular church as a member.  Later she was a Free Will Baptist, evidence of which is condensed from ‘History of the Firelands’, by W.W. Williams : Lydia Webb is among the eighteen signatories, 6 June 1836, who united in Monroeville, (Huron County, Ohio) to form a religious conference.  Out of this grew the local Baptist Church, which adopted the ‘Philadelphia articles’ for its organization and worship.

Property : She is named along with her husband as defendants in a suit filed in the County Clerk’s Office in Utica, New York; 29 March 1841, book 99, page 286 – partition action in Court of Chancery, sale of property in Whitestown, New York by the master of the Chancery Court.  Unfortunately the abstract from which this information was culled fails to describe the nature of the property.

Complainants included : Danforth Parmelee, Sylvia Parmelee, Hannah Parmelee, Edwin Parmelee, Adeline Parmelee, Luman Parmelee, Luther Parmelee, Sylvester Parmelee; Stephen & Sabrina Nichols; Timothy, Almira, & Davis Bailey; and Redd & Arsavilla Daniels.

Defendants included : Erastus Parmelee, Jason Parmelee, Amanda Parmelee, Helen Parmelee, Charlotte Ann Parmelee, Alva Parmelee; David & Lydia Webb; (many others of the surnames Baker, Williams, Wilson, Allen, Cooper, Collar, Young, de Moine, Davis, and Hinkston or it could be Inkston).

Family : Her background is clouded.  Originally, it seemed that she was one of the children of Ozias Parmelee & Lydia Pierson of Killingworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut based on two sources, albeit unreliable without corroborative evidence :

(1) The notes of Webb Hester (her great-great-grandson) & a bible record he published in the journal of the Firelands Historical Society (Firelands Pioneer, T.S. Vol XII, page 15) purport to show Lydia’s date & place of birth; - the note of Hester has the date of 24 October 1776 and the place as Killingworth and the bible record stating the same date, sans the place.

(2) Barbour’s compilation of Connecticut town records showed – Ozias Parmelee (born 11 January 1741/42, Killingworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut,; died circa 1814) married 24 December 1767 Lydia Pierson (born 23 September 1746).  Their children included : Miriam Parmelee (born 12 September 1768 Killingworth, married Israel Isbell, 23 July 1786); Electa Parmelee (born 10 May 1770 killingworth, married Nathaniel Davis, 15 August 1790); Lydia Parmelee (born 13 January 1772 Killingworth, died 3 November 1776); Sylvester Parmelee (born 16 January 1774 Killingworth, married Hannah Barnard 7 April 1796 in Whitestown); Sabrina Parmelee (born 30 July 1780 Killingworth); Luther Parmelee (born 6 July 1783 Killingworth, married Betsey Bennett); Danforth Parmelee (born 18 October 1789 Killingworth); Zadah Parmelee (born 4 July 1791 Oneida County, New York, married Lansing Bailey 2 March 1809, died 15 August 1813).

From this information it was surmised that perhaps Lydia (wife of David Webb) was born to Ozias & Lydia Parmelee after the early death of the infant Lydia born in 1772, but failed to be recorded.  Although it is remotely possible, it is hardly tangible, because the first Lydia died in 3 November 1776 and the second Lydia was born 24 October 1776.  It is not likely that Ozias & Lydia would have nemed two children Lydia at the same time.  Incidentally, Lydia & Electa are names common in David & Lydia Webb’s family in subsequent generations.

(3) C
areful examination of Records of the First Congregational Church of Westmoreland, Oneida County, New York, seem to indicate that she may be one of the children of Amos Parmely & his wife Lucia, as evidenced by several circumstantial entries in the church record (arranged chronologically) :

Members admitted to the Church (page 23) – 14 October 1792 – Lucia Parmely.
Baptisms (page 5) – 14 October 1792 – Eunice, Amos & Jiles Hull, Children of Amos Parmely.
Deaths (page 12) – 9 May 1793 – Tyrannus Parmeley, aged 20.
Baptisms (page 5) – 13 October 1793 – Jerusha, daughter of Amos & Lucia Parmely.
Marriages (page 1) – 3 October 1796 – Joseph Inkston to Jerusha Parmelee.
Marriages (page 2) – 3 January 1798 – David Webb to Lydia Parmelee.

It should be stated that the family of Ozias Parmelee and wife Lydia (Pierson) Parmelee also lived in Whitestown, Oneida County, New York concurrently with the family of Amos, making identification of Lydia in relation to either family quite troublesome.  In these circumstances, it appears that at the least, Ozias Parmelee and Amos Parmely were probably related, either as siblings or cousins; the both had daughters named Jerusha, and daughters named Lydia (if the theory is true) and they were both from Killingworth.

(4)  It appears that after careful examination of records.
